"The whole thing has been really, really motivating for the pupils!
It has really made a direct impact on the learning and teaching in my school. The children are able to see their work online almost immediately as I can publish their work from a desktop computer in their own classroom. Seeing it on the web right away has been really, really motivating for the kids and has made a good impact on their level of reading and writing and the quality of work they are doing is improving all the time.
I’ve got a bee in my bunnet about boys and writing (and that could be an oxymoron in its very own right). I’ve also used our website as a link to get children to use wiki pages. (http://www.wikispaces.com) which is another way of communicating with the outside world. For example, my Primary 6 pupils are using wiki pages to start a news debate on nuclear energy after listening to the news and listening to the Labour Party talking about the nuclear power. Already we’ve had parents and indeed the Head of Education himself has posted his comments on our their pages. We want to extend and publicise that because we would like parents to be confident to enter debates like this. The possibilities in that area pretty big for getting parental feedback or finding out what people think about what’s going on in the school and sharing school policies where people can post comments about them. In the past, when comments have come to the schoo, the approach was not interactive. However, with wiki pages people can see what other people have commented on and that stimulates it’s own debate as well. That’s been quite positive too.
I would like to commend to you all a product called Hot Potatoes (http://hotpot.uvic.ca) which is a really good way of creating interactive quizzes and homework online, crosswords, word searches and jumbled up words, great for foreign languages and maths as well .......and it’s free, my favourite price!"
