The Scottish Executive is committed to improving the involvement of parents in their children's education and in the work of the school itself. The need for research derives from a growing recognition of the importance of the role of parents and home-school partnerships in improving levels of achievement and attainment in schools and the overall quality of the educational experience.
Here, on this page you will find some documents and information which relate to this important partnership. Left-click to view a document or right-click to download it for viewing off-line.

A new leaflet from the Scottish Executive is called “Sharing Information”. Its focus is
on sharing information, with much emphasis on this being a two-way process.
Communication from home to school might include information about hobbies and
sports, achievements, worries or difficulties, an illness, unexpected changes, or
moving house. A variety of methods for sharing information are listed, such as phone
calls and text messaging, emails and websites, letters and newsletters, and of
course parent information evenings and workshops. This leaflet and others in the series can be found on the Parentzone website. Also available is a new CD called “Involving Parents - Examples of good practice”.

|
|
This research was carried out by George Street Research to explore the level of involvement that parents currently have in different types of educational and school related activities. It aims to identify barriers to involvement so that strategies can be introduced to overcome these and ultimately improve parental involvement. It was published by the Scottish Executive in March 2005.

Scottish Schools (Parental Involvement) Act 2006
|
Changes have recently been made to the law to help parents and schools work together as partners in children’s learning. The Scottish Parliament has passed the Scottish Schools (Parental Involvement) Act 2006 to encourage and support more parents to become involved.
Because parents have such a vital role to play in their children’s education, the Act aims to make it easier for parents to become involved in their own child’s education and in their child’s school more generally.
Many authorities and schools are already working very hard to involve parents, but the Act makes this a priority for every authority and every school.
